Random Quote #425

Sensual pleasure passes in the twinking of an eye, but the friendship between us, the mutual confidence, the delights of the heart, the enchantment of the soul, these things do not perish and can never be destroyed.  I shall love you until I die.  –Voltaire

Another love-letter quote, collected in my college long-distance-dating days.  I like the way this quote speaks to the value of a long-term marriage, the deeper connections that far outlast the allure of dating or the thrill of new love.

Random Quote #200

If you want to be happy for a year, plant a garden; if you want to be happy for life, plant a tree.  –English proverb

Thank you to whoever planted the trees in my yard.  The one in the center that shades my patio was perfectly placed many years ago, and it makes me happy all summer long!

Random Quote #475

…my soul years for the friend whom God has given it–whose soul He has married to my soul.  Oh, my dearest, how that thought thrills me!  –Nathaniel Hawthorne, written to his wife Sophia

A good love letter quote, this one makes me grateful for the soul that God chosen to be married to mine.  I am a girl very much in love, 12 years of marriage and counting.

Random quote #406

Laughter is a smile that burst.  –Patricia Nelson

Doesn’t this just capture a little of the feeling of laughter?  That joy or silliness inside that just can’t help but bubble out?  I especially think of that when I hear Katya and Nathan playing and laughing together (as long as it isn’t silliness during mealtimes or when brushing teeth before bed–that’s no laughing matter!!)

Not-Totally-Random Quote

Not-Totally-Random Quote

In reading The Cloister Walk by Kathleen Norris, I came across this quote about laundry, of all things.

Laundry seems to have an almost religious important for many women.  We groan about the drudgery but seldom talk about the secret pleasure we feel at being able to make dirty things clean, especially the clothes of our loved ones, which possess an intimacy all their own.  Laundry is one of the very few tasks in life that offers instant results, and this is nothing to sneer at.  It’s also democratic; everyone has to do it, or figure out a way to get it done.

It is a little too cold for the clothesline now, but I will admit to some secret pleasure at the piles of clean clothes, finally finished and folded and put away in my loved ones’ drawers.  It is a weekly chore that I can be grateful for.

There is no pleasure in having nothing to do; the fun is in having lots to do and not doing it. –Mary Wilson Little

This is why I do craft projects!  I don’t actually like doing nothing, I just like doing something fun rather than something routine.  Irresponsible at times, to be sure, but part of my definition of a hobby.

Much is gained by closing your mouth and opening your eyes.  –Max Lucado

So true!!  In teaching, in parenting, in spiritual growth…  Observe, watch, learn, rather than be so sure that what I know is better than whatever is happening in front of me.

For every minute spent in organizing, an hour is earned.  –Benjamin Franklin

Although I don’t know if this is true, I wish it were!  I’m not good at cleaning, but I do like to organize things.  Sorting…categorizing…storing…re-arranging…maybe that earns me a little time, even if it isn’t 60 minutes for every minute spent.  Or maybe I “earn” extra time and use it right up organizing some more!!  In any case, it is helpful to have things put away and to know how they fit together.  Organizing is at least a way for me to feel more creative and productive, ready to tackle the next task.

“Why does man have creativity?  Why can man think of many things in his mind, and choose, and then bring forth something that other people can taste, smell, feel, hear, and see?  Because man was created in the image of a Creator.  Man was created that he might create.  It is not a waste of man’s time to be creative.  It is not a waste to pursue artistic or scientific pursuits in creativity, because this is what man was made to be able to do.”  –Edith Shaeffer, The Hidden Art of Homemaking

A bit of an explanation for the joy I find in cooking and craft projects, that’s for sure!
