Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving!

A Litany of Thanksgiving, from the Book of Common Prayer

Let us give thanks to God our Father for all his gifts so freely bestowed upon us.

For the beauty and wonder of your creation, in earth and sky and sea.  We thank you, Lord.

For all that is gracious in the lives of men and women, revealing the image of Christ, we thank you, Lord.

For our daily food and drink, our homes and families, and our friends, we thank you, Lord.

For minds to think, and hearts to love, and hands to serve, we thank you, Lord.

For health and strength to work, and leisure to rest and play, we thank you, Lord.

For the brave and courageous, who are patient in suffering and faithful in adversity, we thank you, Lord.

For all valiant seekers after truth, liberty, and justice, we thank you, Lord.

For the communion of saints, in all times and places, we thank you, Lord.

Above all, we give you thanks for the great mercies and promises given to us in Christ Jesus our Lord;

To him be praise and glory, with you, O Father, and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.

(Thanks to the What’s in the Bible blog for bringing this prayer to my attention.)

Random Quote #167

He who would find a friend without faults would be without friends.

I hope my friends remember this when they think of me–certainly plenty of faults I am grateful they overlook!!

Her heart sang all the way because she was going home to a joyous house…a house where everyone who crosses its threshold knew it was a home…a house that was filled all the time with laughter and silver mugs and snapshots and babies…precious things with curls and chubby knees…and rooms that would welcome her…where the chairs waited patiently and the dresses in her closet were expecting her…where little anniversaries were always being celebrated and little secrets were always being whispered.  –L. M. Montgomery, in Pat of Silver Bush

L. M. Montgomery is one of my favorite authors, and I love the way this quote captures so much of what I think a home should feel like.  I hope my family feels this way about our house–a place where everyone who crosses the threshold knows it is a home.

Having someone to love doubles our joy and halves our sorrow.

Doubling my joy is a part of parenting I really appreciate!  Halving my sorrow is a benefit of marriage that is incredibly valuable.  I am grateful for God’s provision of family life that helps make this quote true for me.

We have no more right to consume happiness without producing it than to consume wealth without producing it.  –George Bernard Shaw

Do I produce happiness?  I hope so.  Happiness isn’t the goal of life, but it is useful to think about what I consume versus what I contribute.

The day is done, and the darkness

Falls from the wings of night,

As a feather is wafted downward.

From an eagle in his flight.

–Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Just a bit of poetry today, a verbal image that describes the way night sneaks into day.  I like it.

If you stop remembering, you’ll forget.  –Drew Trotter

God knew this was true of the Israelites, and it is also true of me.  Over and over they are commanded “remember.”  If I don’t take action to notice what He has done in my life, I too will forget.  If I don’t continue to read His word and remember His work in history, I will forget.  Active remembering is crucial to my picture of God’s faithfulness, His ongoing love, and his continually offered grace.

(In case I haven’t offered my commercial to you in person, One Thousand Gifts is the book that continues to transform my “remembering” on a day to day basis.  The photo version of the book is out on my counter as in the photo above.)

An open home, an open heart, here grows a bountiful harvest.  –Judy Hand

Sometimes I really feel this way!!  I love the feeling of an open home, the idea of rich bounty within to offer freely.  This would be a nice sentiment for a welcome sign on the door.  Perhaps a craft project in the works…

Forget your perfect offering. There is a crack in everything. That is how the light gets in.  –Leonard Cohen

It is convicting to realize how much value I place on perfection even though I am fully aware that I am not and will never be perfect.  I worry that the gifts I give aren’t expensive enough, the projects I make aren’t professional enough, the time I spend with my kids isn’t quality enough, the food I make isn’t healthy enough…so many flaws!  And that doesn’t even touch all the issues of attitude and character and motivation.  The sobering part is to realize that God understands my flaws, has made atonement for my sin, and gives me the perfection of Christ.  I am reminded of 2 Corinthians 4:7:

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.

May my numerous imperfections show forth the light of His grace!
